A new term surrounding productivity, time-efficiency and creativity has taken the internet by storm – the term is coined “life hacks”. Life hacks can be specified for all areas of your life – personal and professional. Here are just of few of my own favorites: 41 Creative DIY Hacks to Improve Your Home, 48 Kitchen and Food Hacks That Will Change Your Life, 9 Easy Career Hacks That Very Few People Actually Do. You may have created your own life hacks without even knowing it!

How can we apply this to our tasks as an admin? What are some membership “hacks” we can apply in our own association to be more productive and efficient with our time to help grow our association and increase bottom line? We’re sharing 3 interesting membership hacks below.

Offer rewards for actions

The North American Association of Floor Covering Distributors offers prizes to members who bring in the most recruitments. These individuals get recognized at their annual event. This provides an incentive for other members to get involved. “We are a trade association, and our members have deep relationships and many industry contacts. This award has become an effective way to incentive our recruitment process,” says Kevin Gammonley, Executive VP of NAAFCD. Most of NAAFCD’s members are sales people too so the competitive nature works.

Prospects are more likely to trust a member of your group rather than you. You can tell them everything you offer and the great benefits they’ll receive, but it’s much more meaningful coming from a member who is actually experiencing those said benefits.

Value Upon SignUp

Offer “free” resources or prizes to prospects who apply for a membership by a certain date and time. The Alliance of Arizona Nonprofits offers 2 free webinars to anyone who applies during the summer months. The webinars, which usually cost $29 per session, are of high value and a great resource. They’ve already seen an uptick in membership.

To make this work for your group, be sure to offer a high-value benefit. This could be a ticket to your next event, early access to important resources or a printed membership directory.

“Micro Advocacy”

The Vacation Rental Management Association started a “micro-advocacy” program that has helped engage over 1,000 non-members across the country. They started by allowing members to opt-in to an alert system that would contact them anytime opportunity for advocacy came up in their local community. Their participation was essentially free marketing for the VRMA.

Whether it’s for advocacy or outreach in a different way, getting involved at the local level shows you care and increases membership growth opportunities.
